Warwick School Boys-U18B vs  RGS Worcester
On: Saturday, 20 Apr 2024
Venue: Away

A bright and sunny start to the season, but a very short game.

RGS won the toss and batted. After a maiden from Hampson, O. Watson picked up a wicket in his first over their wicket-keeper opener exactly picked out Clarke with his pull shot. RGS’s collapse started in the fifth over, when Hampson had their no 3 trapped right in front, and two balls later had an edge from the new batsman taken by a one-handed, diving catch by Hargett behind the stumps. Our fielding continued to be superb with some excellent stops providing great encouragement for the bowlers. The rout continued, with a wickets in each of overs seven, eight and nine. The wicket of RGS captain, off Watson, to a terrific catch by Goodrem saw the end of any real hope of a competitive total. Watson finished with 2-25 from 5 overs, which Hampson was allowed to continue in the search for a five-for. This cam in rather dramatic fashion in his final over which started with an edge past slip and almost a catch to square leg. The third ball completed his five with a skewed catch to Budd at mid-on. The fourth saw a hopeless call from their batters, and two bad throws from us still resulting in a run out. Not surprisingly two very good straight balls were enough to bowl numbers ten and eleven, and for Hampson to finish with 7-13, the best school figures I have seen.

So we were chasing 43. After a century in his last visit to RGS, Budd was bowled fourth ball by a fine yorker. Watson was then brilliantly caught at short mid-wicket, as we made an even worse start than RGS. And when Price was out to the first ball of the fourth over, timing a drive beautifully, for a wonderful caught and bowled, it looked like it might be game on. Baldry decided that attack was the best form of defence, launching a big six over long on, before Tivik took over with some lovely shots as he raced to 24 not out off 12, with five fours, the last (almost a six) taking us to victory off just 32 balls.

RGS 42 all out, 13 overs, Hampson 7-13

WS 47-3, 5.2 overs (Peranantham 24*)

MVP - Hampson

Champagne moment - Hargett's catch
